Who we are
#

Ciência Programada is a website about programming applied to science. Learn more about who produces the content on the About page.

The site has two addresses: https://cienciaprogramada.com.br, in Portuguese, and https://cienciaprogramada.com, in English. This policy applies to both.

The controller of personal data is the site’s author, Francisco Lucio de Schneider Bustamante, in Brazil. The contact address is contato[@]cienciaprogramada.com.br.

See also our Legal Information.

What personal data we collect and why
#

Reading the site does not require registration. Personal data is collected in only three situations: when you comment on an article, through the tools that measure traffic, and through ads. Each one is described below.

This site does not collect sensitive personal data. Providing data is not mandatory: without it, you simply cannot comment. The site’s author does not make automated decisions about you; Google selects personalized ads.

Legal bases #

We process personal data under Brazil’s General Personal Data Protection Law (LGPD) and, for visitors from the European Economic Area (EEA), the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Processing Legal basis
Publishing comments and keeping a commenter account Consent (LGPD, art. 7, I; GDPR, art. 6(1)(a))
Partial IP address, session records and comment area statistics Legitimate interest in protecting the site from abuse (LGPD, art. 7, IX; GDPR, art. 6(1)(f))
Technical access data recorded by Cloudflare Legitimate interest in delivering and protecting the site (LGPD, art. 7, IX; GDPR, art. 6(1)(f))
Google Analytics and Google AdSense, for visitors from the EEA, the UK and Switzerland Consent, given in the message displayed by Google (GDPR, art. 6(1)(a)); without it, no cookies are set
Google Analytics and Google AdSense, for other visitors Legitimate interest in measuring use of the site and supporting it with ads (LGPD, art. 7, IX)

You can withdraw your consent at any time, without affecting anything done before the withdrawal. See Your rights.

Comments
#

Comments use Comentario, an open-source program installed on a server maintained by the site’s author. Comments are stored on that server, not on a third-party platform.

The comment area only loads when you scroll close to it. Someone who reads an article without reaching the end has no contact with the comment server.

Every comment goes through approval before it appears. Once approved, the text and the writer’s name are visible to any visitor.

Ways to comment
#

There are two ways to comment, and the data stored depends on which one you choose.

  1. Without registering. You provide only a name, which can be a nickname. We do not ask for an email address or create an account.

  2. With your Google or GitHub account. You log in on Google’s or GitHub’s own page, and your password never reaches our server. We receive your name, email address, profile picture and an account identifier from these services, and use them to create a commenter account. Your email address is not displayed on the site; it identifies the account and is used to notify you of replies, if you ask for those notifications. Use of these services is subject to Google’s privacy policy and GitHub’s.

You cannot create an account with an email address and password: we do not store commenters’ passwords.

What is stored
#

  • The comment’s text, its date and the name provided.
  • Part of the commenter’s IP address. Only the first two blocks of the address are stored (for example, 203.0.x.x), which does not identify a specific computer. When available, the country estimated from the address is also stored.
  • For those who comment with Google or GitHub: name, email address, profile picture, account identifier on the service, and the dates the account was created and last accessed.
  • For each session of a logged-in user: date, part of the IP address, browser, operating system and device type.
  • Comment area view statistics: page visited, date, part of the IP address, browser, operating system and device type. These records are deleted after 30 days.

If the account has no profile picture, the comment server queries Gravatar with a code derived from the email address, to check whether an image is associated with it.

We do not use external spam detection services: the site’s author reviews comments.

How to change or delete your commenter data
#

You can view, correct or delete your data at any time.

  1. If you commented with Google or GitHub, you can edit or delete your comments in the comment area itself while logged in. In your profile menu, in the same area, you can change your account details and delete the account.

  2. If you commented without registering, no account is linked to the comment, so you cannot edit or delete it yourself. Write to the site’s author with the article and the name you used, and the comment will be removed.

  3. For any other request, such as finding out what data of yours is stored or asking for all of it to be deleted, use the contact details on the About page.

To revoke the access granted at login, use the security settings of your Google or GitHub account.

Cookies
#

The site’s pages are static and do not set their own cookies for reading. Cookies and data stored in your browser come from three sources.

  • Comments. When the comment area loads, the comentario_commenter_session cookie keeps your session for up to 30 days, so that you stay logged in between visits. The browser also stores locally the draft of the comment you are writing, the name used to comment without registering, and the display order you chose. This data stays on your device and can be deleted in your browser settings.
  • Traffic measurement. Google Analytics uses cookies to distinguish visitors. See the Analytics section.
  • Ads. Google AdSense uses cookies to display and measure ads. See the Ads section.

Embedded content from other websites
#

Articles on this site may include embedded content such as videos, images and articles. Embedded content from other websites behaves exactly as if the visitor had visited that website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking and monitor your interaction with the embedded content, including when you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics
#

This site uses Google Analytics to measure traffic. Google Analytics associates the information it collects about visits with the Google Accounts of users who have logged in and allowed this association for ad personalization. This information includes the end user’s location, search and YouTube history, and data from Google’s partner sites. It is also used to provide aggregated, anonymous insights into how visitors behave across devices.

These features are subject to Google’s privacy policy.

For visitors from the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, Google Analytics only sets cookies after consent is given in the message displayed by Google.

Ads
#

This site displays ads from Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies to serve ads based on your visits to this and other websites. You can turn off personalized advertising in Google’s ad settings and learn more about how Google uses information from partner sites.

Visitors from the EEA, the UK and Switzerland see a consent message from Google before ads are personalized.

Who we share your data with
#

We do not sell or transfer personal data to third parties.

Approved comments are public: any visitor can read the text and the writer’s name. The email address and the other data described under Comments are restricted to the site’s author.

Where we send your data
#

  • Access data is sent to Google Analytics, and ads are served by Google AdSense.
  • If you comment with your Google or GitHub account, the login goes through those services.
  • A code derived from the commenter account’s email address may be sent to Gravatar to look up the profile picture.
  • The site’s pages are delivered through Cloudflare’s network, which records technical access data, such as the IP address, to operate and to protect itself from attacks.

How long we keep data
#

  • Comments: until they are removed, by you or at your request.
  • Commenter account: until you delete it or ask for it to be deleted.
  • Comment area view statistics: 30 days.
  • Comment session cookie: up to 30 days.
  • Google Analytics, Google AdSense and Cloudflare: for the periods set in those services.

Your rights
#

You can ask us to confirm whether we process your data, and for access to it and its correction, deletion or portability. You can also restrict or object to its processing and withdraw any consent you have given.

To do so, write to contato[@]cienciaprogramada.com.br. We will reply within the period set by the applicable law. For comments, you can also follow the steps under How to change or delete your commenter data.

You also have the right to complain to a data protection authority: in Brazil, the National Data Protection Authority (ANPD); in the EEA, the authority of the country where you live or work, or where the alleged infringement took place.

How we protect your data
#

We do not collect sensitive data or store commenters’ passwords.

The connection to the site and to the comment server is protected by encryption (HTTPS). The comment database is not accessible from the internet, and the administration area requires authentication.
